Nootropics are substances or supplements that enhance your brain and increase your metal power. I have been interested in nootropics since college, where I actually used them for everything to improving my grades to winning a bench-press competition. Back then I took a couple different things with some very interesting results including piracetam, DMAE, Choline and huperzine A. However since then I have expanded my knowledge on nootropics and want to test out some new things. With anythnig in life that could have a potentially postive impact on your life you need to test it out to see if it works for you. Below are the current round of nootropics I will be testing out when I get back home. I have included a little bit about each nootropic along with the link to the actual product I bought.
It is part of the racetam family, one of the first ever nootropic products ever released however phenlypiracetam can be up to 30-60 times more potent than piracetam. There have been so many studies done on pircetam both long term and short term that is considered very safe. Some people take it every day; some people take it in mega doses all with no known major side effects. I plan to use it a couple times a week, for specific tasks that require energy and focus. It has been said to be bad for creative thinking however, so keep that in mind when taking it.
Dose: 100 mg as a starting point test from there.
Vinpocetine increases blood flow to your brain and research suggests it may improve cognitive performance and short term memory loss experienced with stress or aging. Animal studies have shown that it increases circulation to the brain. This is used as a stable for all nootropic stacks, including things like alpha brain.
Its effects on Cerebral Blood Flow far exceed all other nootropics. It enhances brain metabolism by increasing glucose utilization as well as blood and oxygen flow.
Vinpocetine is a derivative of vincamine (a phytonootropic from periwinkle). While less potent as a mental stimulant than vincamine, Vinpocetine is the preferred nootropic for Enhancing blood flow. It also stimulates the part of the brain involved in info involved in information processing, attention, cortical/behavioral arousal, learning and memory the Locus Coeruleus. It also has both a significant antioxidant effect and it inhibits platelet aggregation (blood sticking together to form blood clots).
20-40 mg daily with meals.
DMAE is a precursor to actelycholine and has been found to enhance mental concentration prevent DNA damage. Enhance brain activity. Enhance ability to fight stressors. Improve learning, memory, creativity, and verbal fluency. Actelycholine plays many major functions in the brain including making new memories.
DoseL For improving exercise performance: 300 to 2000 mg of deanol per day, though I have heard other does ranges that go from 100-300mg for mental performance.
4. Bacopa Extract
Bacopa has long term benefits to memory and is also used as a sleep/dream enhancer,an anxiolytic and to decrease anxiety. It may take a wile for memory effects to be gained but these effects can be experienced quicker if you use a high daily dose. Some people report an immediate and subtle gain to clarity of thought. However it may make you drowsy, so many people choose to take this at night before bed. One of the active chemicals is Bacosides. Effects and quality may vary from brand to brand. A higher percentage of bacosides does not necessarily indicate a better product; other active molecules have been identified. It is also supposed to reduce anxiety.
5. Alpha GPC
It is a unique NeuroActive form of choline that rapidly penetrates the blood brain barrier. Choline is a precursor to acetyl-choline, a neurotransmitter that is involved in memory and other cognitive functions. Alpha GPC is more bioavailable than other forms of choline which may or may not be able to cross the blood brain barrier. Clinical studies have demonstrated that supplementation with Alpha GPC can increase the brain’s synthesis of acetyl-choline which supports memory. It is also a precursor for PhosphatidylCholine which supports brain structure. Thus Alpha GPC helps to support cognitive function and mental performance.
Dose: 300-2000 mg daily.

6. Huperzine A
Huperzine A is used as an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor and NMDA receptor antagonist. It is used for memory support as well increasing the vividness of dreams, and has been used by many to help with lucid dreaming. Huperzine A is used for Alzheimer’s disease, memory and learning enhancement, and age-related memory impairment. It is also used for treating a muscle disease called myasthenia gravis, for increasing alertness and energy, and for protecting against agents that damage the nerves such as nerve gases (and if it is this badass you know you should be taking it). It works by increasing the levels of actelycholine by inhibiting its breakdown from Acetylcholinesterase, which as stated above is used in the brain as a communication tool within the brain and to the muscles. It also acts by strengthing the brain’s NMDA receptors (which Enhances Focus, Learning, and Brain Functioning) as well.
Huperzine A is a natural plant alkaloid (extracted from Huperzia serrata), which quickly and potently boosts memory, learning, and concentration. It has been used worldwide for decades in adults and high school students. It is considered the most potent short term memory enhancer available.
Dose:Take 200-400 mcg daily for best results with meals.

Phosphatidylserine can be found in a lot of food sources, and is extremely abundant in brain tissue, especially bovine brain. In athletes, it has been shown to improve cognitive functioning, performance, endocrine response to stress, decreased muscle damage, and decreased soreness and improved well-being following exercise in athletes involved in cycling, weight training, golf and endurance running. PS helps to combat the increased levels of cortisol that happen when individuals exercise, which basically means it lowers that bad types of stress produced when you work out. PS supplementation promotes desirable a desirable hormone balance for athletes when taken at the 800mg – 600 mg level for 10 days, this helps combat the negative effects that come with over training. It also enhances mood in younger people during mental stress, and improves accuracy during tee-off by increasing the stress resistance in golfers.
PS has also been shown to be very effective in treating ADD, the children in this study supplemented with 200mg once per day for two months.
Dose: 100mg – 800 mg
8. L- Theanine
L-Theanine is used to reduce mental and physical stress, improve cognition, boost mood and cognitive performance. It can cross the blood brain barrier and is used with caffeine in a synergistic manner to maximize results.
Its works by increasing the overall level of the brain inhibitory transmitter GABA as well as increasing the brains overall dopamine levels. Theanine has also been shown to promote alpha wave production. In rat studies even at extremely high doses there does not seem to be any negative side effects. Theanine may also be useful in preventing ischemic neuronal damage. It is added to many soft drinks in Japan in the same way that caffeine is added to drinks in the US, however it is marketed as a supplement to either increase focus and concentration or they claim relaxing and tranquilizing properties. The combination of L-theanine and caffeine has been shown to promote faster simple reaction time, faster numeric working memory reaction time and improved sentence verification accuracy.
Dose: Minimum 100mg
I highly recommend you try all of these nootropics, see what works for you and what doesn’t. To follow my nootropic progress or get a more easy to digest version of nootropics you can view my nootropic spreadsheet.
